When I was living in Reston and McLean, I remember the pesky Canadian geese. I was a typical Northern Virginian which meant I was perpetually in a hurry. My schedule was often tight enough to make a two minute crossing from a flock of a geese a disaster.
Yet somehow I survived without ever challenging one of the geese or even running over one. I know that overwintering geese create a terrible mess in the city. They actually make the same kind of mess on the local golf course.
However, Canadian geese in the right habitat are not such bad creatures. We live on a large coastal river, the White Oak. Each year one pair of geese comes to our subdivision to raise their young.
While we might have to step around a little goose poop, they really cause very little trouble. We have yet to have a second couple show up so over-population has not become a problem.
With our marshes and waters, the geese are in their element, and it suits them well.
While they might be a nuisance in another environment, here in Bluewater Cove on the White Oak River, the geese are just part of the scenery so far.
I cannot say the same about Lake Anna when we visited it last summer.
I need to get back to watching the seasons change. We are well into Spring on the coast so summer should not be far away.
