The temperatures this weekend have been amazing. While spring was creeping up the hill last week. It has turned into a rush in the last few days. A week ago this past Sunday, my wife tells me that it was under 32F here in Roanoke.
Yesterday, which was Sunday, the temperatures got almost to eighty degrees Fahrenheit. Tomorrow the thermometer is supposed to hit ninety. The leaves are quickly making themselves visible. Last night I was out with the dogs, and I noticed that our pin oak is starting to leaf out. It is an amazing tree which has been around for twenty one years. A tree service company told us it is the nicest pin oak in the Roanoke Valley. Whether that is true or not, it brings us a lot of pleasure.
The only trees on the mountain without leaves are the walnuts and ashes. I expect to see some on them soon if this weather continues.
We took advantage of the weekend weather to visit Greenbrier Nursery on Buck Mountain Road. We are trying to figure out what plants we should use to replace the holly bushes in front of our home. The holly trees and bushes have become to expensive to maintain because of their size. We had a lot of fun at the nursery and came up with some ideas for deer resistant plants that we could use.
By the time we get the old plants removed, their stumps ground, and new top soil put in place, this will not be a cheap project.
Yesterday besides having a wonderful Eastern lunch with ham, potato salad, deviled eggs, and roasted asparagus, we took the afternoon off to visit the Taubman Art Museum. Our oldest daughter, who was visiting from Northern Virginia, used to work at the front desk when she was in high school at Cave Spring and the museum was in the Center in the Square.
I took a few pictures, but they do not do it justice. I would definitely recommend a visit. I think my wife and daughter really enjoyed the Judith Lieber purse display. It was very well done. I had no idea purses could be that sparkly.
We started out cloudy this morning, but now we have blue skies and some breezes. The mountains have that beautiful blue color they get on spring mornings. With those hot temperatures in the forecast for tomorrow, it is too bad we cannot bottle some of this cool air and use it tomorrow.
I continue to add to my spring photo collection on Picasa Web Albums.
