Have you also tried this to have fresh tomatoes later into the season? Before the frost hits them, pull up the vines by the roots. They should still have lots of green tomatoes on them, even that late. Hang the vines upside down, with the roots at the top, in a basement where temps don't go below freezing.
We did this a number of years ago, and were amazed at how well it worked. Lately, though, we've not grown our own tomatoes, as we've had so much else to deal with.
Of course you can also make some delicious fried green tomatoes! Yumm! I can almost taste them as I write this.
