I imagine it will be a few days before the magnitude of the disaster is clear, but I suspect that there will be some serious agricultural consequences from the several evenings of sub-freezing weather that the Roanoke Valley has experienced.
You know that it has been cold when the leaves on a Poplar tree freeze like the ones in the picture to the right. The Holly bushes in our house had new growth which the cold has blackened.
Weather is something you can never count on to do anything but surprise you. In a year when many of us would like to make sure that we eat food is as local as possible, our farmers are going to be challenged by the damage sustained by the crops which which had responded to the recent heat.
I am hoping for the best, but I expect to start seeing damage reports int he paper soon. We even saw some Dogwood blooms which had been harmed this evening
Hopefully this will be the last cold snap of the year.
