The second Pirates movie is definitely a summer escape movie. It escapes completely from any semblance of a plot, but what the heck, the only reason there is a second Pirates movie is so that the ladies can get another look at Johnny Depp's eye liner.
I actually liked the first movie more than "Deadman's Chest." There is so little seriousness to this movie that I think we just take it for what it is, a bunch of special effects shots loosely strung together. Then we enjoy it. I'm not going to waste any brain cells trying to figure out Deadman's Chest.
Keira Knightly and Orlando Bloom seemed to have stronger parts in the second movie, but I kept want Captain Jack from the first movie to show up. I think the director is probably rationing Johnny Depp just to keep up the interest of the ladies for the third movie.
Davey Jones was a well done special effect as was the giant sea monster so they were both kind of fun to watch.
There is nothing wrong with a movie being just a total escape. I laughed a little, sometimes at the movie itself, but I can't complain. It was a reasonable enough evening of entertainment.
My one hope is that the third movie ends up being a better hooked together, and that Johnny returns to the true Pirate form of the first movie. I'm pretty sure I'll be dragged to third movie of the trilogy no matter what. That is as long as Johnny doesn't stop wearing that eye liner.
