Since we moved our sales office downtown, I've always wondered why there was only one bench in the little plaza between Kirk and Church Avenue. Well today workers showed up and added several chairs, benches, and even some tables.
I suspect we'll become a destination since our trees make a nice shady spot. There are so many great little restaurants down in the old Market Building which is just a couple minutes walk away, I suspect we'll eventually see a nice lunch crowd.
I have had a lot fun sampling all the places in the Roanoke Market Building. There's just about any kind of food that you could want. The crowds are very friendly and there is enough attitude in the eating spots to bring a smile to your face.
I've already written about the Burger in the Square which I have to be careful to visit only occasionally since their burgers are so addictive.
I've tried the barbecue, the seafood, and the Philly Cheese steaks, and several salads from the deli, but one of my favorite spots is the home of the "King," Zorba's which specializes in Greek and Mediterranean foods. So far my favorite is Zorba's Greek Salad with Chicken.
The only challenge with Zorba's is once you start going there, they become a little possessive with their customers. It's a little dangerous to consider eating some place else.
The good news is that their salads are excellent, the pitas great, and naturally the gyros most excellent, so why would you want to eat any other spot of course unless you were hungry for a cheeseburger.
I don't have an exact count on eating places in the Market Square building, but my guess is there is around a dozen.
Now as the weather gets even better, I suspect those benches and chairs outside of our office will find lots of folks stopping by to eat their Market Building lunches.
