Over forty years ago, I can remember my Uncle Austin, who was a volunteer fireman, taking a Saturday afternoon to help cook chicken at the fire station to raise funds for new equipment.
Yesterday we enjoyed some chicken from the Cave Spring Fire Station. The firemen cooks had even prepared for the showers by building a quick cover for their grilling area.
They also have one of the most unique fast food drive through areas in the Valley. You actually pull into the fire station, give them $6 for each half chicken you would like and in minutes you are on your way.
The firefighers are trying to raise funds to buy safety equipement for fighting brush fires. Which means you can to do something positive for the community, eat some good food, and skip the cooking and clean-up part for the meal.
There's no danger of my two older kids eating any of it, since half a chicken definitely qualifies as "Chicken with Bones." The chicken the firemen serve reminds of what we used to cook our first night on some of our Boy Scout camping trips. We would leave with some frozen chicken halves which would end up just barely thawed by dinner time. Some would wrap them in foil, but I preferred cooking mine on a little grill set on stones over a nice bed of coals.
Yesterday's meal included a roll, cole slaw, and green beans. It was well worth the six dolllars. The service was speedy and the food very tasty.
If someone knows when the next firemen cookout will be, I'll be glad to post the information.
Fond memories of the VFW & Kiwanis Chicken stands on Rt 404 the way to the Delaware beaches.
Although, price for a half chicken, roll, rice, and chips is only $5.00.
Which reminds me, the 57th annual Delmarva Chicken Festival is coming up in June, featuring a 10 foot frying pan, and many activities associated around...CHICKEN!
