We finally made it to Snappy Lunch for lunch. That doesn't seem like a big challenge until you realize that Snappy closes at 1:15 pm on Thursday through Saturday and only stays open until 1:45 pm on Monday through Wednesday.
It's hard to work two or three hours, and then make the drive of nearly two hours from Roanoke to Mount Airy and get there by 1 pm. Snappy is not far from the intersection of Pine Street and North Main.
I would suggest that they change their name, but not much about Snappy Lunch changes. When we had a place in Mount Airy, Snappy Lunch was a regular breakfast stop for us. We only had one minor complaint and that was we would rather have our coffee from a real cup instead of a Styrofoam one.
I think this is one of the few times that we weren't interrogated about why we were in town and what our connections were to Mount Airy. Glenda, my wife, tried to order breakfast, but I guess that ends much earlier than 1 pm.
We both settled on a "Pork Chop Sandwich" with the works which includes, chili, slaw, tomato, mustard, and onion. This is only our third time to enjoy one of these historic sandwiches, but I thought it was even better than I remembered it.
My mother lived in Mount Airy for nearly sixty years and only ate one, so I'm head of the game having tackled three. It's really hard to imagine how large these sandwiches are. I don't even know where they find pork chops that big.
If a sandwich could get into the Smithsonian, it should be this one. Since the classic Pork Chop Sandwich is only available from a single location, it should be easy to mount a campaign.
As the owner is getting up in years, I would suggest making plans to get to Snappy as soon as possible. There may never again be sandwiches to rival this one.
I just hope you don't get there when a bus load of tourists is unloading. If you do, remember the wait is worth it. We did find out that you can order the sandwich on a plate with all the fixings. It might be a lot easier to eat that way.
