Well actually the best meal deal in the Roanoke area is in Salem at the Pancake House at 1840 Apperson Dr., otherwise know as the Lee Highway. You'll find it on the right just after Salem Valley Eight Theater headed towards Roanoke.
I almost hate to tell others about the secret of the Pancake House since the Pancake House isn't exactly a huge spot. There's a surprising amount of room for diners but there's very little room to relax while space frees up. There are times you may have to wait for a table or a spot at the counter, but the wait is worth it.
We often get caught up in some project and by the time we notice it is time for dinner, cooking and cleaning up for two people seems like more work than it is worth. The Pancake House is a good place for an almost homecooked meal. Having it located a little over five minutes from our house, makes a dinner decision easy. This Google map will guide you to the spot for some some classic diner food.
In spite of the tiny, unassuming building, there's a great warm atmosphere inside with the wait staff and many customers obviously very familiar with each other.
My favorites on the menu are sausage biscuits for breakfast, the cheeseburger combo for lunch, and pretty well any of the specials for dinner. I try to stay away from lunch since the fries are far better than you find at a fast food restaurant.
I also love the homemade chicken noodle soup which they usually have once a week in the winter. They often have a special with a grilled cheese sandwich and a bowl of soup.
Some of the evening specials are meatloaf, spaghetti, and country style steak. Of course there is one that I think wins the title of best meal deal in the area.
That would the pot roast which comes potatoes and carrots, a biscuit, cornbread, or roll and the choice of two other side dishes all for $4.95.
So I'm hoping that everyone forgets that Thursday nights are pot roast night by next week. We might just get busy and need a place to grab a meal, and I don't want to have to wait in the cold.
