We love barbecue. Growing up in the South, especially North Carolina, it's hard not to. As a teenager I enjoyed Stamey's Barbecue. I have sampled Lexington Barbecue, remember Jack's Barbecue here in Roanoke, and have enjoyed Bastian's Barbecue for the last several years. (Google map to Bastian's) Last year I even wrote about barbecue in "The Great American Meal."
Earlier in the week, we sampled "Three Li'l Pigs" barbecue in Daleville, just north of Roanoke. We had a very good meal. Their NC vinegar barbecue is excellent. The restaurant is also bright and clean. Today we were visiting the new location of Original Frameworks, where I have a few of my landscape prints on display. (Google map to Original Frameworks)
We headed to Mill Mountain Bakery at Towers Shopping center for some bread to take down to North Carolina for presents. We were leaving Towers, and took a right on Brandon just because of the traffic. It's then we noticed a new restaurant on the left, "Henry's Memphis BBQ." We quickly turned around and after almost no debate, decided to have dinner since it was already 6pm.
Henry's was a pleasant surprise. There were red checkered tablecloths, tomato based sauce, NC vinegar sauce, and SC mustard based sauce. They have hand-cut french fries, homemade potato chips, and an interestingly different slaw. I saw some folks with ribs, and they looked good but we didn't sample them. We focused on the barbecue sandwiches which were excellent. The restaurant is very bright with lots of windows. We did manage to split a piece of pecan pie which we haven't had in ages. It was very rich but delicious. They also have "Tennessee Wedding Cake" which apparently is a Moon Pie covered with ice cream, chocolate sauce, and topped with whipped cream. The staff was very pleasant and the owner came around and asked what he needed to make better. That's always a good sign. I suspect we will be regulars.
This is a good summer for new places to eat with Jersey Mike's Sub shop opening by the new Kroger on Brambleton and Five Guys' Famous Burgers recent opening in Salem. We had great burgers the other day at Five Guys but it was a little chaotic since they had just opened. Jersey Mike's needs a little more practice to get up to the standards of the one we checked out in Cornelius, NC, but I'm sure they'll get there with a little practice.
