Four days of trying and still no Linux running off of a hard drive. I have had regular communications from SUSE support. I have tried everything they have suggested and the system still hangs.
I did get a a sreen full of interesting errors today.
Dec 1 16:34:45 (none) kernel: Buffer I/O error on device hdb, logical block 17
Dec 1 16:34:45 (none) kernel: hdb: command error: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
Dec 1 16:34:45 (none) kernel: hdb: command error: error=0x54
Dec 1 16:34:45 (none) kernel: ide: failed opcode was 100
Dec 1 16:34:45 (none) kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev hdb, sector 144
That's only a sample, and since I sent that to SUSE support an hour or so ago, I am not surprised that I have not heard back.
I think the first hard drive I worked on was a Corvus Hard Drive in 1983. It required a proprietary network interface card and the 5 megabyte drive was about the same size as one of the old PowerPC 7100s. If my memory serves me correctly, it had a price tag in Canada of around $5000.
The Maxtor 120G dirve I bought at Best Buy was only a little over $100.
I feel like I am back those twenty years, battling with technology instead of using it. The good news is that I am sure Linux will get better at supporting new hardware, and I might even learn how to do this really well.
I figure that by now I could have around fifty installations done assuming I could ever find one that recognized my hard drive.
Well until I hear back from SUSE I am stuck. Maybe I will head down to Yadkin County, North Carolina to visit relatives tomorrow. Yadkin is about as far away from SATA hard drives as you can get.
I will admit to becoming a little frustrated with hardware getting in the way of the software.
