When I started looking for a small photo printer that I could haul around with me on my travels, I really had not done any research.
I typically find that it is hard to find reliable information about printers and Macs. The good news is that I think Macs and non-Apple printers get along fairly well these days.
I already have multiple HP, Epson, and Brother printers in use. As I looked at small photo printers it was hard to get a good handle on the technology, but it seemed that the only thing out there besides inkjet technology was a film cartridge which reminded me of the old fax machine cartridges.
My inkjet printers are real work horses so I decided to go with the 9600 DPI Canon inkjet printer.
It has turned out to be a great portable printer. I use it with my MacBook and find that after the first picture, I get a picture about every forty-eight seconds.
So far I have only bought my ink from Staples where it is running about $34 for a cartridge and 100 sheets of paper. The borderless 4X6 prints that I am doing are not using up the ink in 100 sheets, but I am sure that varies.
My cost is slightly over thirty cents per picture. The quality of the prints is outstanding.
I am running Leopard on my MacBook. When cropping the pictures in iPhoto I generally constrain them to 4X6 so I do not lose any of the image.
The Cannon Pixma Mini320 is a great printer to make your MacBook grand baby friendly. I just set my MacBook on my daughter's dining table and print until the ladies have all the photos that they want.
One other nice advantage of the Pixma is that you can use the photo memory card slot to import photos to your Mac. That helps since my MacBook never seems to have enough USB ports.
I bought my printer at one of the big box stores. Walmart does have it online for around $179. That seems close to what I paid for it.
