They were all on the interstates yesterday. They were crawling all over Interstates 81 and 77. Specifically they were driving in the left lanes of these highways. Actually they're weren't driving there, they were cruising there, oblivious to the rest of the world. Of course their speed was whatever happened to please them at the moment. So they were driving at anything from ten miles under to ten miles over the average speed of the traffic flow.
I don't have any problem with people being in the left lane of an Interstate with only two lanes in one direction. It's just that it isn't a place to dawdle after you have passed the vehicle which in theory you moved over in the left lane to pass. Somehow all the signs of "slower traffic keep right" just don't seem to mean anything to those folks who believe we found weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.
You would think a line of fifteen or twenty vehicles behind you would give them a clue that they might try driving the right lane for a while. Of course the most amazing thing is that you can have half a dozen cars or trucks manage to pass one of these idiots on the right, and they still don't get it.
The only thing I can figure is that they are so used to being on the "right" that when they wander over to the left lane, the experience completely confuses them and they become lost, and then they convince themselves that they are in the "right" lane and that there is no other lane to the right of them.
Then it is only logical that the line of traffic behind them is dismissed like the evidence that we found no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. They drive along in the left lane oblivious to the impact that their actions are having on the rest of the folks on the highway just as they ignore the impact of all the death and destruction we have wrought on Iraq.
Of course adamantly refusing to change your lane or your opinion no matter what the circumstance causes those of us who have figured out which end is up a fair degree of discomfort. We have to take some chances to get around these idiots or just accept that the left lane cruisers are running the world.
I think most of us who pay attention to the world around us have seen our tolerance level for the left lane cruisers decline. Of course their behavior often is far worse than just cruising in the left lane. There was one guy in a Suburban with NC plates yesterday who was in the left lane and driving anywhere between 60 mph and 85 mph depending whether or not someone was trying to pass him.
I finally managed to get around him and then a couple slower vehicles driving in the right lane. As soon as he saw me pull over into the right lane, he speeded up and drove right beside me until he blocked me in behind a slow moving truck. I figured he wanted to punish me for me so audacious as to get around him. Since road rage isn't very healthy, I didn't rise to bait and let him go on by. Eventually I passed him again, but only once in twenty miles did I see him slip up and move over to the right lane.
Of course then we found a whole other group of crazy folks, the ones who seemed to enjoy trying to rubber neck from the Interstate at the boats on Lake Norman just before we got to Cornelius. It's hard to imagine the danger of trying to check out the people in boats while driving on an Interstate. Of course it's a lot easier if you create a traffic jam and slow everyone down to a crawl.
I have to wonder about our driver training system. Either it is completely worthless with no thought given to Interstate driving, or these folks are getting their drivers' licenses out of bubble gum machines and their training in bumper cars at the local fairs.
I don't where these folks belong, but they certainly don't belong on Interstates. Perhaps we can find a safe spot for them cataloging all the weapons of mass destruction or counting grains of sand on a beach.
