Dining along coastal side roads, The Big Oak Drive In, Salter Path, NC
This past weekend, my wife and I celebrated our 34th anniversary. We had a really busy week and were a little worn out by the weekend.
So when it came time to pick where to have our anniversary dinner, neither one of us wanted to go some place fancy.
We had talked about going to the Blue Moon Bistro in Beaufort where we had our anniversary dinner the first time we visited the Beaufort area four years ago.
After considering everything, a walk on the beach and a simple dinner at a Drive-in sounded pretty good and much better than getting dressed up and driving 35 minutes.
We had a magical time walking on the beach before dinner. Schools of Menhaden were swimming within ten feet of the beach. They were followed by marauding schools of Bluefish. The Menhaden were flying into the air trying to escape the jaws and teeth of the murderous Bluefish. Unfortunately the Bluefish were following them right into the air.
It was an awesome scene with Menhaden exploding everywhere. I started to take a picture and quickly figured out that I didn't a memory card in my camera.
We decided to go back last night. Not only did I have a memory card but I also was carrying a fishing rod rigged to catch Bluefish. Of course there wasn't a fish in sigh.
We also went back to the Big Oak Drive-in. We have now eaten enough of their sandwiches to label some as favorites.
I really enjoy their clam burger (all the way) with a shrimp burger being in second place. My wife likes their cheese burger, especially the pickles on it.
We have tried their barbecue, and it's fine, there are just lots of great barbecue places in North Carolina where focus on barbecue produces exceptional results.
The Big Oak also does a very good job with pink lemonade and french fries.
You can go back in time at the Big Oak, there aren't many places left where you can have an anniversary dinner for under $20.
We finished the evening by stopping for an ice cream cone at the Sweet Spot in Emerald Isle.
It was a great way to celebrate our anniversary.
