Too often today we live in sealed environments with no real connection to the natural world or its changing moods.
Yesterday we had to close the windows before 11 am and let the air conditioning run. We have ours set on seventy eight degrees. It was one of the few times we have had to do that this spring.
I came back after work, and it was still pretty warm. We went for dinner and then a long walk on the beach. When we got in later, it was very pleasant outside so I went around the house opening windows, hoping to capture the cool of the night.
The humidity is still low in late spring even on the North Carolina coast. I had hoped to catch the sunrise on the beach this morning, but I woke too early at 5:15 am, closed my eyes for a few minutes which stretched to 6:15 am. That meant I had missed my opportunity.
Still I did get up then and was pleased to see the thermometer on my night table by the open window reading under seventy degrees.
The house had cooled nicely overnight, As I moved around in my morning chores it was a true pleasure to enjoy the cool morning breezes with no interruption from heat pumps or other noise.
I did imagine a time when being warm during the day was just part of life, and the cool of the evening was eagerly anticipated.
