Now wars aren't won with cheeseburgers. However, you can get lots of people excited talking about the best burger in the area. I just recently comment on a burger post at Blue Ridge Muse. Someone else made the comment that the burger post had received the most comments of any recent post.
Back in March 2005 I wrote about some most excellent burgers that I have sampled at "Five Guys Famous Burgers" in Chantilly.
This past fall I was pretty excited to see Five Guys come to Salem. When my wife Glenda was recovering from her broken ankle, I would swing by from the corporate office in Blacksburg and grab us dinner. The burgers traveled very well.
I've also written about the Surry Diner which is just off Interstate 77 near Dobson, NC. They have a good burger to go with their delicious hot dogs.
Then of course one of my favorite places for burgers has been around for over forty years. That would be Odell's in Mount Airy, NC. You can read about my favorite burger there, the Big Moe, in "Saturday night at Odell's, everything is all right."
So imagine my surprise in finding a great burger when I wandered off to lunch one day after we moved our Webmail.us sales office to downtown Roanoke. All I did was follow the crowds down Market Street to the old City Market Building. Just inside the door I found "Burger in the Square."
It didn't take me long to order a combo double cheesburger with waffle fries and giant iced tea, all for under $7. I quickly hiked back to the office and was treated to what I consider one of the finest burgers I have ever tasted. Burger in the Square grinds their own hamburger, and there is no doubt in my mind that is some of the best I have seen. Of course being an ex-cattleman, I don't offer those comments lightly.
Now aside from traveling back to the office upside down in my bag, the picture to the left is that of a nearly perfect cheeseburger.
Of course the only way to find out for yourself is to hustle on down to the Roanoke Market.
Just make sure you get there sometime between 10:30 AM and 6:00 PM Monday through Saturday. If you want to call ahead for more info, their phone number is 540 982-1639. Just in case you need a map, click on this link.
Let the burger wars begin.
