Needed Mac users to move to the NC Coast

I have finally decided that it is easier to bring new Mac users to the Southern Outer Banks than it is to convert Windows users.  I thought perhaps logic, reason, and continuing plagues of viruses would do the trick of convincing them to switch.  Unfortunately I was wrong.

In fact I said this in one of my recent posts.

I cannot believe people are not looking for alternatives to their Windows PCs.

The reality is that the PCs don't seem to be working very well, and about 60% of the agents are limited in what they can do with their PC because it is too hard to use or isn't reliable.

Still they move inevitably forward towards buying another snake just like the one that bit them the first time.

The quote was referring to some real estate agents that I have seen who are using Windows PCs and not doing very  well.

I figure if I could convince a significant number of Mac users to come to the Southern Outer Banks, that it would do the following.

  1. Increase property values immediately since most Mac users are traditionally a little more at the mid to upper end of disposal income.
  2. Inject some different opinions into the debate on whether or not we need more public boat access points which are more important than wireless hot spots down here.
  3. Potentially get some new restaurants with better vegetarian offerings.
  4. Perhaps tip the balance and help us get a new Target instead of a Walmart.
  5. Provide used lawn furniture for artificial reefs to attract more fish.  It's too hot to sit outside now.
  6. Help track down pollution in the White Oak since Mac users are generally pretty green.
  7. Encourage Barnes & Nobel to come to the coast so we could have a spot where we could read books.
  8. Agitate for freedom to chose computer platforms in the schools.
  9. Fill some of the graphic artist jobs that I see in the paper.
  10. Most importantly be around to back me up when I say it easier done on a Mac.

While I know this is asking a lot of metro based Mac Users, I think it is time to concentrate our resources in one area.  I am tired of being the only person defending my use of a Mac.  Think what we could do as a group.

When you come to the coast, you will find wonderful homes, great restaurants, fantastic beaches, and very friendly people who will do anything to make you feel welcome except use a Mac.

It is a beautiful area and there is lots to do including boating.

You can get a quick feel for the area based on my reports from our first year.  You can expect no snow, we only had 19 hours of below freezing temperatures last January.

On top of that, if you use me as a RealtorĀ®,  I'll quickly prove that using a Mac in real estate is a way to be successful.   Then we'll get more Mac users and so the circle will continue until we take over the land.

This is completely selfish on my part, but just think of your new relaxed life style.  It will probably help you live longer since you'll no longer be in those tense urban environments.

Try to put yourself in this picture.

If enough of you come and buy property, I might even make enough money to buy a new Mac.

Update-

I just uploaded my first blog entry with the new iWeb.   Here is the link, iWeb seems to have improved some.  I'll have more details as I give it an extended try.

This is the same site on dot Mac.

If you can score me a job in the area, I would be more then happy to relocate!

:)

I'll even use my Mac skills to build you a nicer web page (grin)

IT jobs are mostly military related in our area.

We are an area of simple fishermen, caretakers of tourists and purveyors of property along with your usual assortment of people who prefer nature's rhythms to those of the city.

You might have to mow lawns, do IT, and rent bicycles or something like that to get by.

I always welcome web design help, though I pretty well consider my Typepad pages a design wasteland.

It's sort of like Windows, there's a lot of legacy stuff in there that would be trouble if I started mucking around in it.

I do usually get some nice comments about my http://coastalnc.org pages.

Thanks for the hookup on Linkedin.

I second your plea. Although I currently employ 10 Mac users on the Northern Outer Banks (of course we are the stereotypical graphic arts folks) - we sure could use more Mac users out here on this beautiful hunk of sand.

As an LA resident, I have to ask the obvious question:

What is this "below freezing temperatures" of which you speak?

Not a problem - I tend to use the heck out of Linkedin.

Yeah - the problem is that the really cool places to live have very few hardcore IT jobs. Spokane is a wonderful blend, but the salaries are a bit low. I do lawns, however :)

I think the easiest way to explain the number for below freezing is for you to take LA's rank in the list of cities with the worst traffic and add it to the number of days in December that we don't have traffic jams.

1+31=32

Seriously when I was at Apple, I was always amazed at how the people from LA would find Cupertino "cold."

I had some folks working for me from Santa Monica and they would act like they were facing death if we scheduled an east coast meeting in the winter.

That's very appealing (pun intended). Problem is my wife pounds on her- er ah- uses a Windows machine so we would be a net gain of zero. By the way what's your altitude there?

Actually as you well know, one Mac user is worth two Windows users who are usually stuck in the bushes.

Thus we come away ahead of the game if you move.

As you can see from the map below,

http://tinyurl.com/2uym3s

the most popular altitude is sea level. Carteret is well over 60% water.

We do manage to get to a high point of 51 ft in Cedar Point. Even that is hard for me to believe.

If you need a county with a higher point, you can try this link.

One other good thing is that you can live in a glass house (hurricane proof of course) and not worry about someone hurling native stones at you since we don't have any.

Lest you worry about us in times of global warming, most county residents would welcome at extra foot of water, it would make navigation in the sounds a little easier at low tide.
