Well Mark Spencer was right when he said you have to touch a Mac to appreciate it. Mark is one of the owners of the Apple Store in Mount Airy, NC that I wrote about in "Mayberry gets an Apple Store."
On Friday of this week I got a chance to stop by the Apple Store at Tyson's Corner in Northern Virginia. I was impressed by the crowd, but what really got me excited was the new MacBook. I spent a few minutes trying it out.
It's definitely zippy, and I actually like the new screen. It reminds me of the ones that I have seen on Sony laptops around our office.
Apple really does put out great products, and my basement office has a collection of old ones that I have bought to prove it.
A little over a year ago, when I wrote "Apple Technology Junkies," I was hoping to satisfy my technolust through Linux. It turned out that Suse Linux was more trouble than it worth. Xandros Linux which let me also run Windows apps wasn't that exciting and did some weird things. Ubuntu Linux has been great and is what I'm running down, but I have to admit to doing little more than playing with it over the last few months. Of course the Dell laptop I bought last fall for work is only used for things which I can't do on my Powerbook.
I have to admit to doing over 90% of my work on a Mac. Going into the Apple Store in Tyson's today and typing on a MacBook was like tasting forbidden fruit, a new Mac.
I've seen the reports of discoloration and a few other issues, but I know in time Apple will fix them. I'll probably resist as long as I can, but the reality of it is that I would like a new Mac laptop and the MacBook looks like it will fill the bill.
Then there's the interesting phenomenon of buying a product which get better and better as the software is upgraded. Having been through that with Apple a few times, I know it works. As the applications get optimized, the product gets better.
I think I'm hooked.
I haven't had a chance to try the new MacBook yet, but everyone I know says they love it -- even with the new screen.
I usually go to the Short Pump store, and will check them out as soon as I can.
I think they iMacs are going to get a speed bump when they introduce the Mac towers next month. As for now I am holding off on iPods and Macs... some rev changes are around the corner.
